CONDITIONALS  -  IF
 
FUTURE, PRESENT, PAST
 
 
If I work hard, I will make it.
If I worked hard, I would make it.
If I had worked hard, I would have made it.
 
 
Future:     work             -   will make
Present:   worked        -    would make
Past:         had worked -    would have made

Remember, will +V1,    would +V1,   would have +V3                

WRITE THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES IN THREE TENSES

EXAMPLE:-

If I (study)_________________, I (know)________________ how to do it.

Fut)   If I study tomorrow, I will know how to do it.

Pres)  If I studied, I would know how to do it but I don't study so I don't know.

Past)  If I had studied last week, I would have known how to do it but I didn't study so I didn't know.

 

1. If you (learn)_____________, you (pass)___________ the exam.

2.  If you (work)_____________ longer hours, you (earn)____________ more money.

3.  If I (have)___________ enough time, I (help)_____________ you.

4.  If she (have)___________ the music, she (give)_____________ it to you.

5.  If he (not want)______________ the job, he (not take)__________ it.

A.   Fill in the missing verbs.

FUTURE 

Remember there is no "will" in the verb following if.

 

If I (see)_________ him, I (tell)_________ him.

If she (arrive)___________ on time, she (be)__________ able to join us.

If he (not do )______________ it, he (get)___________ into trouble.

They (be)____________ here if they (find)____________ the time.

We (succeed)______________ if we (work)

___________ hard.

 

PRESENT

Remember the verb following if is in the past, the verb following would is always V1 

 

If we (can)________________, we (do)____________ it

but we (can not)_____________.

 

If we (know)____________ the answer, we (tell)___________ you but we (not know)____________ it.

 

If I (have)____________ the money, I (buy)____________ it but I (not have)____________ the money.

 

If she (take)____________ the work, it (help)___________ her pay for the house.

 

I (fly)__________ to the moon if I (have)__________ the opportunity.

 

PAST

Turn the above 10 sentences into conditionals in the past tense.  Remember all verbs will now be V3

 

SEE IF YOU HAVE UNDERSTOOD

When you have completed the above, try and add words like now, yesterday, tomorrow, next week, last month, etc.  Be very careful that these words do not mislead you when doing the above exercises

Conditions in the present - an imaginary situation
 
REMEMBER:-  If I were a rich man, I would give you all my money - but I am not so I can't give you all my money.

To help you remember the PRESENT CONDITIONAL:-
 
If I could, I would.
If I were you, I wouldn't do that.
If I were a millionaire, I would give you half my money.

The verb "be" in the present conditional will always appear as "were".

If I were you, I would think twice before doing that.

 If he were here now, it would be fun.

 If she were with us, things would be so much easier.

THINGS TO HELP YOU

REMEMBER - have, has, had and have had, has had, had had

EXAMPLE:-  He has had too much drink which is why he is unable to do that. If he had had less to drink, he would be able to function.  (NOTICE - Here the tenses are not both in the past instead the action took place in the past but its consequence affects the present.)

REMEMBER - can, could, be able.

EXAMPLE:- I would have done it if I had been able.
